Beal City National Honor Society
by Jennifer Butkovich
As a program for students who are interested in excelling and making a difference, NHS strives to bring out the leadership qualities and academic excellence in each student. The National Honor Society is based upon four principles: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Juniors and seniors with a 3.5 GPA are considered to have met the scholarship component of NHS. From there, students who choose to apply are considered by a committee of 5 teachers to determine whether or not the student meets the requirements of leadership, service, and character.
The National Honor Society does a lot of activities both in our school and the community. They do several community service projects each year including working at the annual end of summer chicken barbeque, hosting blood drives, a walk-a-thon for cystic fibrosis, and various other fundraisers to benefit local service organizations.
You may also see them fundraising with bake sales, selling smoothies, and hosting a volleyball tournament in order to raise money for an end of year trip—rewarding the students and allowing them to see other parts of the state/Midwest.
