Crunch Time!

Beal City Participates In The Apple Crunch Challenge

On October 24th, 2014 at 9:00 a.m.,  Beal City Public Schools celebrated National Food Day by participating in The Apple Crunch Challenge.  The entire district including students, staff and administration gathered to establish a record of how many people could bite into a Michigan apple at the same time.  Locally grown Michigan apples were provided by Hearty Harvest and The Aggie Café.

This year Beal City’s Aggie Café partnered with Hearty Harvest out of Remus Michigan to participate in the farm to School program. Students have been enjoying their fresh vegetables and fruits all year in the lunch room: peaches, apples, watermelon, cantaloupe, pears, onions, peppers and tomatoes!  This has been so exciting to be able to offer these fresh items to our students.

Some Apple fun facts:

  • Apples are a member of the rose family
  • It takes energy from 50 leaves to produce one apple

  • Apples are Michigan’s largest and most valuable crop, with a value of about $100 million annually
  • On average, Michigan harvests about 20 million bushels (840 million pounds) of apples per year
