WINTER WEATHER CLOTHING
The Parent-Student Handbook states the following requirements for seasonal clothing:
"When the temperature is 41-50 degrees, coats or sweatshirts are necessary. At 40 degrees or below, snow pants, boots, gloves and hats are required. If a student comes to school unprepared to go outside, he/she will receive a warning the first time. If cold weather clothing is forgotten more than one time, students will remain on the blacktop. At all times, best judgment in accordance with weather conditions is expected."
This year it is especially hard for students and parents alike to understand the need for snow pants and boots, due to the lack of snow/winter weather conditions. As we all know, the snow and cold conditions will arrive at some point and students need to be prepared.
SCHOOL ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE TIMES
Parents are reminded that students should not arrive at school before 7:35 a.m. and must be picked up no later than 3:00 p.m., due to lack of adult supervision. The elementary principal may contact parents if this becomes a continuing problem. Also, keep in mind that elementary students attending evening sporting events at the school should not leave the gym/lobby area for any reason. Students are required to remain with their parents at all times. Elementary and High School hallways and classrooms are OFF LIMITS. ELEMENTARY STUDENTS SHOULD NOT BE DROPPED OFF AT THE SCHOOL TO ATTEND THE EVENTS ALONE.
DUPLICATE COPIES FOR SPLIT HOUSEHOLDS
If your child's custody is shared between two or more households, you may request that school information (newsletters, teacher letters, report cards, progress reports, etc.) be sent to all household addresses. Please contact Mrs. Fussman in the elementary office and give her any additional addresses that need to be included in the student's data file. Copies of the Parent - Students Handbook may also be requested.
SCHOOL CANCELLATIONS OR DELAYS
Snow Days, Delays and Early Dismissals from school are a part of living here in Michigan. This year we seem to be getting off to a slow start when it comes to inclement weather, BUT we know it will arrive. Notification of school closings/delays will always be aired on the following stations: WCEN, WHNN, WCFX, WMMI-WCZY, and TV 9&10. Early dismissals which could result from bad weather, mechanical breakdowns within the school or high absence due to illness will also be sent to the above listed stations. In addition, parents will receive a phone call from our automated parent contact system provided by Honeywell. We encourage parents to contact the school if they are not receiving these notifications either through television, radio or phone.
ABSENCE REPORTING/SCHOOL MEDICATION POLICY
This time of year we see an increase in sick students, whether it be the intestinal flu, common cold, pneumonia or strep throat; we see a little bit of everything. Please make sure you contact the elementary office if your child is missing school for ANY reason. We do keep track of excused and unexcused absences, so if we do not hear from the parents we assume the absence is unexcused. You may excuse absences with a note sent to school or a phone call to the office.
Sometimes students are diagnosed with illnesses that require medication. Of course, our first choice would be for parents to set up the dosing schedule so it avoids having to take medication at school. But that is not always possible. In order to give any kind of medication at school (prescription or over-the-counter) we must have a medication form on file which is completed by the doctor and signed by both the parent and the physician. If the form is not on file, parents will have to come to school to give medications or send another responsible adult to do that for them. Students WILL not be allowed to transport medication to/from school. An adult needs to bring the medication to the office along with the required paperwork before the child will be allowed to take medications at school. If you have any questions concerning our medication policy, please call the elementary office at 644-2740.
